Floyd
Mayweather JR is Back – And Nothing’s Changed
By Geoff Poundes (At the Press
Conference)-May 2, 2009
Here at the MGM Grand, with only a few hours to go before Manny Pacquiao and
Ricky Hatton take to the ring, Golden Boy sprung a surprise.
This morning’s Media Centre greeted it’s army of correspondents from around
the world with a press release inviting them to trek across the vast expanse
of MGM real estate to the Hollywood Theater, where there would be a major
announcement.
The rumor mill had already been set in motion, so it was only a mild
surprise when Richard Schaeffer unveiled Golden Boy’s next great promotion:
“Number One”, featuring the sublime skills of a come-backing Floyd
Mayweather, JR., 39-0, 25 KO’s, against those of Juan Manuel Marquez, 50-4,
37 KO’s, still regarded by some as Manny Pacquiao’s conqueror and
consequently the best pound for pound fighter on the planet (in Floyd’s
absence).
It appears the fight will be a non-title fight, and whilst it’s being
described as a Welterweight contest there may yet be revealed a catchweight
that will reduce the margin of difference – remember that Marquez is yet to
fight above 135 pounds so that even in this age of pugilistic elasticity
some common sense may yet prevail.
Marquez, of course, was scintillating in his last fight at lightweight –
when he dismantled the excellent Juan Diaz – and will want the fight closer
to 140. Mayweather, meanwhile, will be acutely aware of the damage that
Oscar De La Hoya did to himself in agreeing to drop to an unrealistic weight
in taking on Manny Pacquiao, and will want the fight made at closer to 147.
There’s a rumor going round the Media Centre here that the fight will end up
being made at 144 pounds.Read
