SEAL BEACH, California (July 3, 2009) – Coming off of his career-defining performance against 3-time UFC® heavyweight title challenger Pedro "The Rock" Rizzo last Saturday night in Biloxi, Dutch knockout artist Gilbert "The Hurricane" Yvel has been added to the Affliction M-1 Global’s star-studded "Trilogy" Pay-Per-View event against another former UFC® heavyweight title challenger, Paul "The Headhunter" Buentello, live August 1 from Honda Center in Anaheim.

Miguel Cotto: The Threat to Manny Pacquiao
By Geoff “The Professor” Poundes-July 3, 2009

I loved what I saw on June 13th when Miguel Cotto, 34-1, 27 KO’s, eked out a split decision over Joshua Clottey, 35-2, 20 KO’s, at Madison Square Garden. It was a rare event – a top quality fight between two men at the peak of their powers, yes – but more importantly it was one of those occasions when the poorer fighter on the night won, and won legitimately.

Boxing is one of those idiosyncratic sports where the palpably inferior participant can still prevail, either by landing a single equalizing blow, or by tactically out-maneuvering their opponent. Think of Michael Spinks-Larry Holmes, or Ray Leonard-Marvin Hagler. Read more

RSR Remembers Alexis Arguello
By Geoff “The Professor” Poundes – July 3, 2009

It was with some shock and much sadness that I heard of the news of Alexis Arguello's untimely death this week. Arguello was one of the world's finest ever featherweight, junior lightweight and lightweight boxers, and even performed at the highest level at junior welterweight, where he lost in two of the eighties most brutal contests to Aaron "The Hawk" Pryor, himself one of the boxing icons of that decade.

The shock of Arguello's death at just 57 years of age was compounded by the manner and mystery of his demise - he was found at his home with fatal shotgun wounds to his chest. Early reports from Nicaragua have suggested that the former champion, who had become involved in politics and got himself elected as the Mayor of his hometown Managua, had turned a gun on himself after succumbing to the pressures of office. 'The Latin Snake' Can't Take No Mora 'The Contender'
By Steve Kim (July 3, 2009) Photo © German Villasenor

A few months back, Sergio Mora believed that he would be fighting for the middleweight title of the world on June 27th against Kelly Pavlik. Instead, as Pavlik pulled out of that fight with a rather dubious staph infection, Mora was left without a fight, which bothers the normally thoughtful and introspective fighter to no end. His career has not just been stalemated, but come to a complete, utter standstill.

UFC Pioneer Patrick Smith makes N.E. debut in Super Fight vs. Kevin Jordan

SALEM, New Hampshire (July 3, 2009) – UFC pioneer Patrick Smith was there at the beginning and 16 years later the ageless wonder is still going strong as he prepares to fight another UFC veteran, super heavyweight Kevin "The Shamnan" Jordan (11-8-0), in the Super Fight on American Steel Cagefighting’s (ASC) first professional mixed martial arts show, July 31 at the Icenter in Salem, New Hampshire. The Rematch: Lesnar-Mir II July 2, 2009

Michael DiSanto, UFC - 17 months after Brock Lesnar squared off against Frank Mir, the two are set to tango one more time at UFC 100, in what many are predicting to be most successful pay-per-view event in the promotion's nearly 16-year history.

Mir submitted Lesnar by leg lock in 90 seconds on that February night in 2008. For Lesnar, it was a valuable lesson learned during his quest to become the UFC Heavyweight Champion. After all, he appeared to be dominating the action through the first 80 seconds of the fight before making a single mistake that opened the door for Mir to bring the former NCAA national wrestling champion's UFC debut to an abrupt, unceremonious end. SOBRAL Prepares for Mousasi

SEAL BEACH, California (July 1, 2009) — Gegard Mousasi has declared his fight against Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion, Renato "Babalu" Sobral an all-out war. "Sobral is so tough. When he comes, he comes to fight," says Mousasi, as he trains for one of the biggest challenges of his career. Babalu Sobral ranks in the top ten of light heavyweights and has been training since Mousasi was a newborn. Besides the ten years difference in age and experience, Mousasi will have to contend with Sobral’s explosiveness and dangerous Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills in the ring.

Sobral, on the other hand, prepares for the power and athleticism that comes with Mousasi’s youth. Although Babalu is well aware of the dangers Mousasi presents, he fully intends on continuing his current winning streak. "On the ground," Babalu contemplates his possible advantage over Mousasi, "…probably that’s where I can take advantage (of him). Whatever it takes." Read more...

Chris Arreola States His Case
By Gabriel Montoya July 1, 2009

Following the demise of Mike Tyson and running through the reign of retired British heavyweight kingpin Lennox Lewis, American heavyweight boxing fans search for a savior seems like it’s been going on forever. For a brief period of time, Evander Holyfield was that man as he took out Tyson conqueror Buster Douglas, had an epic trilogy with Riddick Bowe, and later dispatched Mike Tyson. While still an attraction at the time and for years to come. Tyson lost most of his steam en route to his KO loss at the hands of Douglas. Following his release from prison and reemergence on the heavyweight scene, while he maintained his drawing power and the aura of “The Baddest Man on the Planet,”....

Leonard Garcia: Bigger, Faster...Smarter? July 1, 2009

Frank Curreri, WEC - Several months ago, if someone had told Leonard Garcia there was another 145-pounder on the planet who could drop him with one punch, the tough-as-nails Texan would probably have laughed in their face.

Past experience had empowered Garcia with an unshakable faith in his chin. Over a 10-year professional career he had never been knocked out, wobbled or submitted. To a fault, the affable Mexican-American never had a problem being struck in the face; it only stoked his inner warrior and made him charge his opponent with more ferocity and determination.

"I feed off stuff like that," Garcia said. "When somebody hits me it makes me want to hit them back harder." Read more…

Floyd Mayweather JR: The Rightful Pound for Pound King By Daniel Poland-June 30, 2009

As boxing fans around the world stacked their fridges with beer in preparation for the May 2nd super showdown between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton, hours before the first bell a much anticipated announcement was made, the ring return of former pound for pound king and 5-Division World Champion Pretty Boy Floyd “Money” Mayweather was announced. On July 18th, he will go head to head with pound for pound contender, Mexican warrior Juan Manuel Marquez.

Mayweather will tell you he is the pound for pound king but his inactivity has the whole world disagreeing with that statement. I am the biggest Mayweather fan and it kills me to say he isn’t pound for pound best, but after the Marquez fight, if he comes away with an impressive victory, I will definitely have him alongside Filipino Manny Pacquiao on the pound for pound list. Almost a Star By Steve Kim-June 30, 2009

It all seemed so perfect for Victor Ortiz, Golden Boy Promotions and HBO. Needing a nascent young superstar to carry them into the future, it looked like after two explosive rounds they had found their man. The 22-year old Ortiz, who came with the requisite looks, background story and entertaining style, had floored Argentinian Marcos Maidana three times in the first two frames - while suffering a knockdown of his own in the first.

He was on his way. As you looked out into the audience at the Staples Center (announced at just over 8,600) you could just feel it. The crowd was on its feet and energized...Almost a Star

Jon Fitch still raining icepicks on those steel shores June 30, 2009

Chuck Mindenhall, UFC - Jon Fitch has seen a lot in his seven years of professional fighting. He saw stars when he got knocked out by Wilson Gouveia in 2002. He saw opportunity when he caught Thiago Alves with an upkick. He's seen his arm raised against Diego Sanchez, a doppelgänger in Chris Wilson and a welterweight title shot against Georges St-Pierre. But up until UFC 94, he had never seen grown men in sequins before a fight.

"I was standing right behind him in the tunnel as they called him, and I was like, ‘what the hell are these ring girls doing, and why are they wearing sequin dresses? ’" he says. "Then I realized, Jesus—it’s Gono and his crew."

Unnerving, sure, especially for those who saw the whole choreographed dance step that Akhiro Gono and his cornermen performed on the way to the Octagon. Fitch? He just stared at the ground to keep from laughing. Moments later he came out with his trademark snarl to Johnny Cash’s version of "Rusty Cage." Read more…
